GP crosses 50,000-subscriber mark
Grameen Phone Limited has crossed the milestone of 50,000 mobile telephone subscribers on the last week of September.
This remarkable achievement came less than three years after the launching of GrameenPhone on March 26,1997. GP ended its inaugural of year with some 18,000 subscribers and started the current year with only about 30,000 subscribers. The fast expansion of the coverage area of GrameenPhones network and the aggressive marketing of existing and new products greatly contributer to the increasing number of subscribers. Strong support from the owners and lenders of GrameenPhone enabled it to expand its coverage and ontroduce new products and services in the market. In addition to the three biggest cities of Dhaka,Chittagong and Khulna, GrameenPhone prrsently has coverage in 14 other districts including Narayanganj,Narsingdi, Gazipur,Comilla,Feni,Kishoreganj,Mymensingh,Jamalpur,Sirajganj,Kushtia,Pabna, Chuadaga, Jhenidah and Jessore.By the end of the current Year,Grameenphone is planning to connect Khulna and Chittagong through a microwave link. The districts of Sylhet,Bagerhat,Barisal,Bhola and Pirojpur will come under GrameenPhones coverage with in 1999.
GrameenPhone plans to further strengthen its existing coverage and bring another 19 districts under its coverage by the year 2000.Currently,V has 200 base stations around the country and will be increased to 204 by the end of the year.Another 72 base stations will be added to the network next year.
GrameenPhone introduces 2-way International Roaming
Grameenphone Limited is proud to be the first telecom operator in Bangladesh to provide its subscribers with the both-way international Roaming facility. This will enable GP subscribers to use their mobile telephones in foreign countries where Grameenphone has a parthner network.
Presently, Grameenphone has roaming agreements with 36 mobile telephone has roaming Agreements with 36 mobile telephone operators in foreign countries .Of them,12 are on the active roaming list:seven with both-way roaming and five with the one-wayroaming facility.
Under the both-way International Roaming facility, GP subscribers can use their mobile telephones in the country where Grameenphones parther network exists while subscribers of the parther network can also use their mobile phones whilw they are in Bangladesh.
Grameenphone has recently completed both-way International Ranming arrangements,as a first step,withSing Tel Mobile of Singapore,Mobile One of Singapore,Tele Danmark of Denmark,Telenor Mobile of Norway<Hutchison Telecom Co.of Hong Kong Vodafone Ltd.of the United Kingdom and Swisscom of Switzerland. Grameenphone is making all out efforts to bring in more GSM operators under this scheme gradually.
GP subscribers would need to sign separate agreement to avail this feature and should possess an international credit card issued in Bangladesh. Foreign currency regulations of Bangladesh Bank would apply.For foreign nationals who are GP subscribers,the arrangement would be different.
